Sometimes you want someone present for your birth but know they will not be able to be fully present without someone there to assure them, everything is fine or to give them permission to take a break if needed. Many people are unfamiliar with what birth looks like, especially natural birth. Not everyone’s partner is ok with the sight of blood or other fluids. When you are giving birth, they may see you behave differently and this may cause distress in some people. That distress can leak over to you and now you are worrying about someone else and not able to focus on yourself.

A birth doula is not just taking care of the one giving birth. Sometimes that means showing a partner how to comfort you or having them take a quick break to regroup. It can mean reminding the partner to eat and drink and to breath. At one birth I attended, the mom was home for quite a while having contractions. Her parents were there to watch their oldest child. The parents were getting distressed watching their daughter having contractions. Her mother was of a generation where they did not have natural births. I explained that this is what natural labor looks like and everything was indeed normal and going well. This allowed the parents to relax and in turn, the laboring mom could continue her work undisturbed.
