While not all doulas work with clients who are planning a hospital birth, most doulas do attend hospital births and many (including me) will attend your cesarean birth as well. Doulas are trained to support clients in many situations and since most births that happen in the US, happen in a hospital, much of our US training focuses on hospital births. I have attended births as a doula at Tacoma General, St. Josephs, St. Josephs Birth Center and at Tacoma’s Birthing Inn.
I believe that clients who are having hospital births often need a doula the most
Hospitals can be stressful places for some people. The environment and people are unfamiliar, there are noises and smells that are unique to a hospital setting which can all add up to less then ideal birth environment. A doula helps to be a friendly face in an unfamiliar place. Unlike the busy doctors and nurses, we can give you our full attention for the full time it takes to birth your baby. Doulas are a valuable part of the birth team for those who are birthing at a hospital.
