Should I use Nitrous Oxide in For My Birth in Tacoma?

I have many new parents asking about using nitrous oxide during their birth. This is a relatively new option for pain relief during birth in the US, however Europe has been using nitrous oxide for the last 70ish years successfully. So here are some common questions I hear:

Does nitrous oxide take away pain?

Sort of. Nitrous oxide is not like an epidural. It will not take away all of the pain of childbirth. It will help you to relax and not care as much about the contractions. Sometimes when we get in to a “pain/fear” loop, it can make contractions worse. Nitrous will help to relax you and take your mind off of the next contraction.

Will nitrous oxide make me laugh?

No, it will make you feel less inhibited and can make you feel euphoric.

Are there any side effects to nitrous oxide?

Some people reported, nausea and/or tiredness with the gas. These effects normally stopped soon after use of the gas was discontinued.

How is nitrous oxide administered?

You will hold a mask up to your face about 30 seconds before your next contraction starts and breath normally. Then when the contraction is over, you remove the mask from your face. You are in complete control of the gas and decide when you will use it and not use it.

Why would I want to use nitrous oxide vs other pain options?

Nitrous oxide allows you to have more freedom of movement, does not involve needles, and if you decide to stop using it, the effects wear off quickly.

Where can I access nitrous oxide in Tacoma?

Tacoma General, St. Josephs midwifery center and the hospital birth floor, have nitrous oxide available. The Birthing Inn does not have access to nitrous nor do homebirth midwives carry it.
